Unravelling the Mystery of HMPV: A Viral Infection You Need to Know About

March 2025 | Reading time: 2 minutes

What is HMPV?

You’ve probably heard of influenza, the common cold, and even COVID-19, but have you ever heard of HMPV? Short for Human Metapneumovirus, HMPV is a respiratory virus that can cause infections ranging from mild to severe. It’s a relatively new virus, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, and it’s slowly gaining recognition as a significant player in the world of respiratory illnesses.

Who's at Risk?

While HMPV can infect people of all ages, it tends to hit the young and the elderly the hardest. Infants, young children, and older adults with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to developing severe symptoms. However, even healthy adults can experience unpleasant effects like coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

Symptoms and Complications

The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of other respiratory viruses, including fever, runny nose, cough, and sore throat. In some cases, the virus can lead to more serious complications like bronchitis, pneumonia, or even respiratory failure, especially in high-risk groups. It’s important to seek medical attention if you or a loved one experiences severe symptoms or has difficulty breathing.

Prevention and Treatment

Unfortunately, there’s no specific treatment or vaccine for HMPV yet, but there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of infection. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing and covering your coughs and sneezes, can go a long way in preventing the spread of the virus. If you do contract HMPV, your healthcare provider may recommend over-the-counter medications to manage symptoms and plenty of rest and fluids to support your recovery.
