Battling the Pesky HMPV: A Parent’s Guide

February 2025 | Reading time: 2 minutes

What is HMPV?

As parents, we’re always on the lookout for any potential threats to our kids’ health. One lesser-known culprit is the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that can cause cold-like symptoms and even pneumonia in some cases. While it might not be as infamous as the flu or the common cold, HMPV is responsible for a significant number of respiratory infections in children, especially those under five years old.

Spotting the Signs

HMPV can be tricky to detect, as its symptoms often mimic those of other respiratory illnesses. Keep an eye out for a runny nose, cough, fever, and wheezing or difficulty breathing. In some cases, it can even lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, which may require hospitalization. If you notice your little one struggling with these symptoms, it’s always best to consult your pediatrician.

Prevention is Key

As with most viruses, prevention is the best defense against HMPV. Encourage frequent handwashing, especially before meals and after playtime. Teach your kids to cover their coughs and sneezes, and keep them away from others who are sick. Additionally, make sure they get enough rest and maintain a balanced diet to boost their immune systems.

Treating HMPV

Unfortunately, there’s no specific treatment for HMPV, but you can manage the symptoms with over-the-counter medications, plenty of fluids, and rest. In severe cases, your doctor may prescribe antiviral or antibacterial medications to prevent secondary infections. With proper care and support, most children recover within a week or two.
