How Long is HMPV Contagious? A Guide to Recovery and Isolation

January 2025 | Reading time: 3 minutes

HMPV or Human metapneumovirus is a type of common cold that belongs to the virus family called Pneumoviridae. Symptoms of HMPV are much like the flu – patients suffer from coughing, wheezing, sore throat, and sometimes rashes.  Prior to recovery, symptoms can last from a few days to a couple of weeks, however, you may want to practice extra caution for children aged below 6 and adults over 65. Those with immunity troubles should consult a doctor if the symptoms last more than two weeks.

How Long is HMPV Contagious?

HMPV Incubation: The incubation period refers to the time it takes for symptoms to develop after exposure to a carrier. HMVP symptoms can show up 2 to 6 days after you have been infected.  HMPV Contagious Period: The infection phase is when the patient is highly contagious. This begins with the onset of symptoms and usually lasts 5 to 7 days. However, patients who are already suffering from respiratory diseases like asthma can be contagious for up to 2 weeksRecovery Time: The recovery time depends on the underlying health conditions of an individual. For most people recovery begins within a few days and you should be good as new within a week. However, those with lower immunity, especially children and elders may need more time to recover. If symptoms last for over two weeks you should consult a doctor immediately.

Should you Isolate for HMPV?

Yes, Isolation during the infection phase is necessary as HMPV is contagious. If the patient has a fever and is/or coughing, keep them isolated. Homes with small children and older adults must take extra measures to reduce the spread of HMPV.

What are HMPV Post-Recovery Measures?

Stay well hydrated even after recovering from HMPV. Fluids clear out mucus from the respiratory tract and aid in a faster recovery. Avoid draining your physical strength and rest for a few more days to fully recover.  If you are taking care of someone with HMPV wear a mask and gloves when entering their room. Wipe and disinfect all surfaces regularly.

Can you get Infected Twice?

Like the flu, you can get HMPV multiple times but the second infection may not be as severe as the first one. If you are recovering from HMPV avoid crowded places and keep your distance from those showing symptoms.  Carry a sanitizer in your bag in case you are working from an office and cannot avoid public spaces.

FAQ’s

  1. Can you catch HMPV more than once?
Yes, you can get infected by HMPV more than once. It is similar to a common flu and you may experience similar symptoms. However, HMPV in people with lower immunity may cause other respiratory issues.
  2. What are the long-term effects of human metapneumovirus?
Doctors are yet to understand the long-term effects of HMPV fully. However, those already suffering from respiratory illnesses like asthma may have continued bouts of coughing and wheezing even after recovery.
  3. What are the complications of HMPV?
HMPV can cause complications for patients with lower immunity and underlying respiratory conditions. Pneumonia and asthma attacks can be seen in such patients. Those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should also be careful or it can worsen your condition.
  4. Do antibiotics help human metapneumovirus?
Antibiotics do not work against viruses, so they will not help. However, you can use over-the-counter medicines for cold and cough symptoms.
  5. Can HMPV last for months?
You should recover from HMPV in not more than two weeks. Anything more than two weeks requires immediate medical attention. Children below the age of 5 can develop pneumonia from HMPV infection which can last for a long time.
